Share & Voice: Superior McDonalds

I was listening to the radio this morning and this topic came up in conversation.  Superior City Council member Greg Mertzig proposed this ban in accordance with a previous motion made in San Francisco regarding toys given out with fast food.  This motion would ban the Superior McDonalds to give away toys with any happy meal or kids meal containing over 600 calories and 10 percent or more of fat.  Although McDonalds is in no way healthy, I thought this was a unique effort to combat our obesity problem in the United States.  It is exceptionally appealing to me because it targets children, and with our steadily rising obesity rate among youth is considered by some to be our biggest problem area regarding those with weight issues.

  1. I heard about this happening out in California and that it was a fantastic idea. I think a big part of what makes kids begging to go back to mcdonald's is the toys. hopefully, this effort will help persuade kids to be less inclined to eat at mcdonalds.

  2. I think it's a really good idea. At least it's a good start to combating child obesity. I also think they should ban games like Monopoly that entice people into buying McDonalds and the harmful food.

  3. I love this, as a 21 year old who still gets happy meals, this is definitely appealing to me. More so because it informs me when a meal is more than 600 calories, but then I don't get a toy that I don't need either. I would love to see something like this go into effect in the midwest. Baby steps is all we need to start a change and this seems like the perfect way. Honestly, my hope is that one day fast food will be eliminated, because really it is not benefiting a single person in the world (except of course those making money).

  4. I have also heard about this and I think it's a great idea. I know when I was a kid the toy was the best part of the meal. Only giving out the toys to meals with less calories,or better yet give no toys at all, would be a great way to help fight childhood obesity.

  5. Wow this is interesting. I defiantly still get Happy Meals and I always end up throwing away the toy anyways. I think they should put their money towards something else.

  6. Oh. Well, this is a great step forward that McDonalds is taking. I will say I do find it a little discouraging that children's meal contain as much as 600 calories, especially considering the average amount of calories an adult should consume is 500. I didn't notice but did they say which meals are up to 600 calories?
